1. Read the newspaper opinion column and say in 2—3 sentences what it is about.

The text is about Belarus as a member of UNESCO. It contains a little information about 4 Belarusian sites which are included into the UNESCO World Heritage List and the further plans of the Belarusian government.

2. Belarus is a member of UNESCO. Find this extract and read it aloud.

Belarus joined UNESCO in 1954. For many years, Belarus has been building up fruitful and dynamic relations with international organizations. Belarus program of UNESCO activities includes numerous interesting projects in the fields of education, science, information, communications, and, of course, culture. In October 1988, Belarus joined the Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Today, four Belarusian sites have already been included into the UNESCO World Heritage List.

3. Which Belarusian sites are included on the list for protection?

The Belovezhskaya Pushcha national park, the Mir Castle Complex, The Struve Geodetic Arc and included on the List for protection.

4. What other sites does the Belarusian government want to be on the UNESCO List?

The Belarusian government wants independence Avenue in Minsk to add to the UNESCO List.

1. Why is choosing the right job very important?

Choosing a profession is one of the most important decision that influences all our life. It’s just like choosing a wife or a husband to have children with, choosing friends to rely on.

2. Which jobs are popular among young people at present?

Nowadays everybody’s top priority is money. In our materialistic worlds young people usually try to get jobs that are paid well – jobs connected with education and science aren’t so popular and not so well paid.

3. What advice does the speaker give?

The speaker advised to take into consideration such things as talent, skills and personal interest when choosing a career. They will allow everyone to study and work with pleasure, get joy, satisfaction and achieve good results.

Today Belarusian educational system includes pre-school education, general secondary school, vocational education, secondary special education, higher education. The system of education of Belarus includes different types of educational establishments: kindergartens, nurseries, primary, basic and secondary schools, gymnasiums, lyceums, child's home, boarding school, vocational schools, colleges, universities, academies, institutes. Children start going to school at the age of 6. They spend years at primary school and 7 years at secondary school. At the age of 16, when pupils finish the 9th form, they can either leave school or continue their education for another two years. Most schools are secondary comprehensive but there are lyceums and gymnasiums, where pupils get more profound knowledge in various subjects. Marks am given out of 10. All schools have rules, such as to be neatly dressed, not to smoke or to avoid casual hair styles. They get good knowledge in all subjects. All are provided with equal opportunities to get good knowledge. My idea is that good knowledge depends not only on school and teachers but on pupils themselves it has always been Important to have a good education. It gives you more opportunities in life, but It doesn't guarantee that you will have a well-paid, prestigious job with good working conditions and job promotion in future. Unfortunately, these days the values have changed and a person with a good education very often can't find a place in the society. A good education can be the foundation of your career.
